responsAbility – Energy Access Fund

The responsAbilty Energy Access Fund provides working capital to manufacturers and distributors of modern energy products to accelerate their growth and scale of impact. Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda, but it is open to considering projects from other Sub Saharan countries. While its main focus is on hydropower, responsAbility Renewable Energy is actively pursuing projects in the areas of solar, biomass, geothermal and wind. In addition to selling power to the grid, which is the main focus today, it has a special interest in distributed generation, particularly captive generation and minigrids.

Nyamindi Hydropower Cascade: The project consists of three run-of-river hydropower plants located along River Nyamindi, in Kirinyaga County, Kenya, each with an installed capacity of 8MW. The project is being developed in partnership with: Eco Power Holdings Limited (EPHL), an internationally renowned small hydropower developer and EPC contractor, with a proven track record in East Africa and Green Light Holdings Limited (GLH), a Kenyan project development company.

Additional Project Characteristics

1. Investment in and co-development of small to medium-sized renewable energy projects generating 15-60 MW. In addition to selling power to the grid, which is the main focus, the fund has a special interest in distributed generation, particularly captive generation and mini-grids.
2. Small to medium manufacturers or distributors of energy access products with commercially viable business models in the energy access value chain.

Project Requirements

ResponsAbility looks at various stages of the project life cycle (development, construction and operations) with a particular focus on the development stage. While responsAbility Renewable Energy aims to diversify among a variety of technologies (mainly solar, biomass, wind and hydro), its main focus is on small- to medium-scale low-impact run-of-the-river hydropower. ResponsAbility Renewable Energy focuses both on attractive and successful renewable energy businesses and on creating prosperity by providing households and businesses with access to basic necessities for further development and improved living standards.
