Webinar: Exploring Solid Biomass in Rwanda & Uganda

On April 20th 2017, the European Biomass Association (AEBIOM) held its second webinar in collaboration with the Africa-EU Renewable Energy Cooperation Programme (RECP) focused on solid biomass opportunities in Eastern Africa with a focus on Rwanda and Uganda. The webinar was supported by the Swedish Bioenergy Association (SVEBIO) and was moderated by the CEO of SVEBIO, Gustav Melin.

The webinar was opened by Melin and the first speaker was Alexander Huppertz, the Project Manager for the RECP, who provided an overview of African renewable energy market segments as well as the services of the RECP and its Finance Catalyst.

To highlight the potential of biomass in Uganda and to make a case for why companies should invest there, Nolbert Muhumuza, the Chairperson of the Biomass Energy Efficient Technologies Association (BEETA) presented the general energy profile of Uganda as well as the consumption and use of biomass feedstocks, and related projects underway and policies supporting bioenergy for further investment.

Virginia Ssemakula, as the Director of GoodFire Ltd, a rural briquetting company that harvests carbonised residues, presented the company and gave an overview of the challenges that companies entering the Ugandan market should consider and highlighted their solutions. Future plans for GoodFire Ltd were also covered as well as possible partnership opportunities.

The final speaker, Dr. Ivan Twagirashema, as the Chairman of the Rwandan Energy Private Developers, offered insight into the Rwandan bioenergy state of play. His presentation made the case for why Rwanda is the perfect environment for bioenergy companies, while covering biomass initiatives and existing opportunities for biomass waste to power.
